A lengthy and in-depth strategic planning process has culminated in Woodridge being the first in Nelson Mandela Bay, and 2nd in the Eastern Cape Province, to join Round Square. This world-class programme is operational on no less than six continents and strives to foster connection and collaboration between its 230 member schools. According to Craig Carolan, the Director of Professional Development at Round Square, schools that join the organisation are like-minded in that they have a shared understanding of the link between character education and academic success. “The Round Square educational approach encompasses character education and experiential learning, and the application of the Round Square Discovery Framework, which incorporates six themes, which are internationalism, democracy, environmental stewardship, adventure, leadership and service.”

Carolan indicated that these themes are underpinned by twelve discoveries that students typically explore during their learning journey, including inquisitiveness, tenacity, courage, compassion, inventiveness, problem-solving, self-awareness, sense of responsibility, appreciation of diversity, commitment to sustainability, communication and teamwork. There are several direct links between the newly developed Woodridge Strategic Plan, expertly facilitated by Carey-Lyn Kurten of Mila, and the principles of being a Round Square school. College Headmaster, Derek Bradley and Preparatory Headmaster, Trevor von Berg, concurred that this new development will greatly assist in achieving some of the most important objectives, namely to deliver a relevant curriculum aimed at producing innovative problem solvers and ability to grow individuals with a well-developed strength of character.

Other than that, there are countless benefits for staff with respect to networking, staff development and training opportunities as well as benchmarking exercises on an international front. Ultimately, the latter relates to a specific goal aimed at enabling staff to achieve excellence and fulfilment. According to Trust Chairman, Andrea Puggia, the school is thrilled to be a part of such a progressive programme, that will amongst other things, enhance the focus on character education and experiential learning and allow us to further leverage off our unique location and natural surroundings.” “Today’s pupils are the next generation of business, political and community leaders. It is our responsibility to shape the way in which they understand, prepare for, and respond to the world’s challenges, both now and in the future.”
