Woodridge

Overview

Sport is an integral part of life at Woodridge and a vital component of our holistic curriculum. It plays a central role in promoting physical fitness, well-being, character development, and self-confidence, while also providing a meaningful platform for the practical expression of our school values. Our aim is to inspire a genuine love of sport and encourage lifelong participation in physical activity.

Our diverse sports programme caters to a wide range of interests and abilities, ensuring that every learner can find a place where they feel a sense of belonging. We value both participation and achievement, recognising that each pupil develops at their own pace. At the same time, we provide high-quality coaching and opportunities for those who aspire to excel in their chosen sports code. Participation in sport is an essential part of the Woodridge experience. Each term offers a variety of sporting options, and every pupil is expected to select at least one summer and one winter sport, ensuring meaningful engagement and balanced involvement throughout the year.

Team sport is at the heart of our programme. Through team involvement, pupils learn commitment, tolerance, tenacity, and self-discipline as they work towards shared goals. Team environments foster leadership, accountability, and good sportsmanship, while also teaching learners how to handle both victory and defeat with maturity.

These experiences equip them with the resilience and life skills needed to navigate challenges beyond the sports field.

Woodridge teams are proudly competitive and enjoy a strong reputation locally and nationally. Our pupils are known for putting the game before themselves, competing with pride, and often “boxing above their weight.” Regular participation in festivals and fixtures across the country has helped build a culture of determination and excellence.

In recent years, our results and performances have continued to grow, with many pupils earning provincial and national selection across a variety of sports, including cricket, water polo, athletics, hockey, squash, and rugby. While we celebrate these achievements, we remain equally committed to participation, enjoyment, and personal growth.

At Woodridge, sport is more than a programme — it is part of who we are. It helps shape confident, resilient, and well-rounded young people who carry the lessons of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance into all areas of life.

SPECTATORS' code of conduct

At Woodridge College, we encourage all spectators to embrace the ethos of sport at our school. Although we expect students in sports teams to strive to win, we also recognise that matches develop individual skills and that participation should be an enjoyable experience for all. Sport is also about learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the value of participation. To this end, we would ask that all our spectators and supporters be mindful of the following:

  • Respect the decision of the match official, even if it is incorrect.
  • Condemn bad language, rude behaviour, and violence.
  • Act as a positive role model to all young players.
  • Be aware that the players are aware of verbal and emotional abuse and that it can, and often does, affect the standard of play.
  • Accentuate the positive and do not point out the negatives or what a player or players have just done wrong - that is the coach's job.
  • Acknowledge good performances by players from both teams, irrespective of which team you are supporting.
  • Remember that it is a game and serves as a learning experience for the players, whether they win or lose.
  • Learning to lose with dignity is an important aspect of the development of a positive attitude and of the will to win.

Our spectators' code aligns with the values we teach our pupils daily.
