As we approach the December holidays, I wanted to share some thoughts about making the most of family time. Recently, I have been reading Jonathan Haidt's insightful new book, "The Anxious Generation," and it's sparked some thoughts that are particularly relevant as we look ahead to the holiday period.
While our primary school children do not yet face the full challenges of teenage social media use, Haidt's research offers valuable perspective for parents at every stage. His work reminds us of something many of us experienced in our own childhoods - the joy and developmental benefits of free, unstructured play. Remember climbing trees, building forts, or spending hours inventing games with friends? These were not just fun times; they were crucial moments of learning, risk assessment, and social development.
