At Woodridge, Outdoor Education has always been at the heart of our philosophy. From the time our school first opened, learning beyond the classroom has been more than an addition to the timetable – it has been a cornerstone of how we nurture well-rounded, resilient, and confident young people. Even though outdoor experiences are built into our curriculum, we have a more intense focus on Outdoor Education during the first half of Term 3. So, you might be wondering why these experiences are so valuable for our pupils?

Our school’s saying, “more than a school, an experience”, comes alive most clearly through Outdoor Education. OE gives children opportunities to step beyond the walls of the classroom into environments where learning feels real, immediate, and memorable. Whether exploring nature, problem-solving in groups, or taking on physical challenges, pupils aren’t just learning—they’re experiencing growth in a way that stays with them long after the day is over.

Outdoor Education is not simply about being outside. It is a carefully designed program that challenges pupils to think, communicate, and collaborate in meaningful ways. When children gather outdoors to listen, share ideas, and reflect on their experiences, they are strengthening essential communication skills that extend far beyond the playground. These moments of describing and making sense of their learning build confidence in expressing themselves and deepen their ability to listen to others.
