Woodridge

OVERVIEW

Sport is a vital part of the curriculum to promote physical fitness, well-being, character building, and self-confidence. Sport is a place for the practical application of our school values as we strive to develop a love of sport and a lifetime of physical activity.

The diversity of the programme caters to varying interests and abilities, therefore creating a sense of belonging. Both participation and achievement are valued, allowing individuals to develop at their own pace. Opportunities and expertise are provided for those pupils who strive for excellence in their particular sport.

We believe that playing in a team promotes commitment, tolerance, tenacity, and self-discipline in our pupils as they work together to achieve a common goal. At the heart of this is teamwork, leadership, and good sportsmanship. An ability to cope with both victory and defeat and learn how to manage challenges that might come their way in years to come.

The Woodridge teams are highly competitive and have a good reputation when playing against our local schools or representing the College at various festivals all over the country.

Woodridge pupils will always put the game above themselves and compete to the best of their ability and are known to “box above our weight.”

Each term, various choices will be presented to pupils. Please refer to the sports choices form for more details on the options available per season. Attendance at all practices and matches is compulsory, and pupils are expected to be available for sporting events on weekends.

The spirit and determination shown by Woodridge sports teams have enabled our sides to achieve fantastic results more often than not. Our teams have a solid reputation when attending various festivals around the country, especially the Independent Schools festivals, where we have been consistently successful in all our sports.

Over the last few years, we have seen a dramatic rise in our results. Many of our pupils have excelled even further and have been selected to represent provincial and national sides in various sports, including cricket, water polo, athletics, hockey, squash, and rugby. We have an average of 50 – 60 provincial reps each year.

We have had several pupils selected for various national teams and sporting codes. Most notably, Amica de Jager (SA Open Water Swimming, Springbok & National Senior Colours for Surf Lifesaving, etc.), Edith Molikoe (SA U18 Hockey, SA Women's Indoor Hockey, SA U21 Ladies, SA Olympic Women's Hockey Squad 2021, etc.) and Caylin Maree (SA U18 & SA U21 Ladies).

We are very proud of the achievements of our sportsmen and women over the years, especially Old Woodridgean, Colin Ingram, South African Protea Cricketer.

Sport facilitates the development of self-control, cooperation, commitment, teamwork and initiative, which is why Woodridge holds sport in such high regard. Making Woodridge accessible

We want to ensure that a Woodridge education is accessible to all deserving pupils. To achieve this financial and social support for those who would ordinarily find Woodridge "out of reach" is not only a desire but an obligation. The privilege of attending Woodridge must remain "within reach" to all. The Foundation raises funds to achieve this as a critical focus area in a measured and structured manner.

02

BUILDING ON WHAT WE HAVE

Woodridge has recovered well since a fire devastated the campus in 2017. The school was rebuilt with purpose and provided us with a modern and sustainable infrastructure. However, we must move with the times, which entails constant refinements to stay current and competitive. Infrastructure enhancements add finesse and impact to academic, outdoor and co-curricular activities, and are necessary infrastructure to ensure that we provide the "experience". Projects will be identified continuously, and the Foundation will seek requisite funding outside the traditional scope of tuition fees.

03

ENHANCING OUR CAPABILITY TO PRODUCE QUALITY WOODRIDGE "GRADUATES"

The Woodridge staff complement is the institution's core. Moreover, it is paramount that the school attracts, develops and retains quality teachers and support staff. Woodridge is committed to producing free-thinking "graduates" who can lead with purpose in all spheres of life. Our staff holds the key to their development, but the relationship has to be symbiotic – we support them, and they support our children. The Foundation will seek to ensure Woodridge has the overall capacity to do just that.

04

THE “EXPERIENCE”

The range of physical activities available at Woodridge College and Preparatory School has always been an attractive aspect. Beyond traditional sporting codes, the school offers outdoor activities that set it apart from other independent schools within the Eastern Cape and South Africa. These formative experiences challenge our pupils to develop self-reliance and team skills that ultimately promote self-confidence and personal growth. For many current and past pupils, they define what it means to be a Woodridgean. We intend to take this to greater heights by making the “experience” even more memorable and impactful.
